Losa Patterson

I specialize in supporting individuals navigating trauma, abuse, addiction, and compulsive behaviours, offering compassionate care to people from all walks of life. As the author of Wahine Warrior: From the Ashes of Trauma Emerges Forgiveness and Love, I wrote this book specifically for my Pacific community, sharing my personal experiences and offering practical guidance for healing. I believe that God is present in the details of our lives, and I am deeply grateful to serve as His instrument in helping others on their journey toward healing.

Reflecting on my own path, I often think how different my experiences might have been if I had encountered a culturally attuned counsellor earlier in my life—someone who understood and embraced Pasifika families with both wisdom and compassion. With a “never leave anyone behind” mentality, I hope that LDS Pasifika counsellors can provide the essential support to uplift and empower our people. Always remember, you are not alone, and it is never too late to seek help.

Qualifications

I hold a Master of Health Science in Psychotherapy (Honours) and have over 30 years of experience working with Pasifika communities, providing culturally sensitive counselling and support.

Professional Membership

I am a registered Clinical Psychotherapist with PACFA, registration number 22 755. I am also a qualified Life Coach with the ICF, registration number 009648625. I adhere to high standards of ethical practice and ongoing professional development, and I am excited to be part of the LDS Pasifika Counsellor Consortium.

Cultural Sensitivity & Expertise

As a first-generation New Zealand-born Samoan/Tongan, who is not fluent in my ancestral languages, I have often felt like an afakasi. In 2007, Waitemata DHB (NZ) hosted the first cultural competency conference, with the Samoan Head of State, Tupua Tamasese Efi (also known as Tupua Tamasese Lealofi IV), serving as the ambassador and keynote speaker. This fono was a milestone in both my life and career. In his presence, I was enlightened about my personal resilience as a ‘Samoan’. It deepened my sense of purpose and clarified my role within the sector in which I work.

I have written several articles on my deep understanding of the unique cultural dynamics, values, and challenges that influence our Pasifika people. My writings in my book, Wahine Warrior, weave life experiences into a delicate tapestry of heartache and healing for Pasifika communities. I approach each therapeutic relationship with respect for our heritage and a reverence for being culturally attuned in the ‘va’ – Teu le Va!

Services Offered

I offer individual, couple, and family counselling with a focus on emotional healing, relationship strengthening, and spiritual growth, while incorporating Pasifika values and beliefs. I also deliver Wahine Warrior Workshops and provide clinical training for both Pacific and mainstream communities on trauma-informed behaviours, interventions, and treatment.

As the Vice President of PIMDAN – Pacific Islands Mt Druitt Action Network, I work closely with local city councils and agencies on initiatives aimed at building capacity within our Pasifika workforce and strengthening our Pacific community in education, health, and family life.

Call to Action

Mental health challenges within the Pacific community are often viewed through a lens of shame, with stigma. Asking for help can be seen as a weakness or even a spiritual deficit. This misunderstanding has led many to suffer in silence. Unfortunately, the cycle of pride and the lingering effects of trauma continue to deeply affect our Pasifika people, leaving emotional scars that hinder healing.

It takes great courage and humility to walk through the doors of a counsellor’s office, particularly in a culture where seeking help may be ridiculed or criticised. The time has come for this stigma to end. We must embrace the importance of asking for help and cultivate the bravery to say, "I think I have a problem."

Our prophets have cautioned us about the adversary’s efforts to destroy our identities, and part of reclaiming our well-being involves understanding ourselves better. Counselling provides a valuable opportunity to gain insight into our thoughts and behaviours. It is essential to know ourselves in order to heal, and healing is the first step toward restoring our true identity and strength.

"It is a privilege and an honour for you to choose me as your counsellor. I hope to support you in reaching your potential, healing, and becoming more like Him. We are all God’s children, and our Heavenly Father wants us to return home to Him. Counselling can help you do just that!"

However I strongly believe that each of us have been blessed with the strength and desire to change our choices to resonate with Gods will for each of us. Understanding the Plan of Salvation and Atonement is key to strengthening our faith to make those hard necessary decisions in our lives which will lead to confidence within ourselves and joy within our relationships.
